PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The 270 MW K2 Wind Farm was constructed in the Township of Ashfield-Colborne Wawanosh, which is located along the shores of Lake Huron. The wind farm is adjacent to the Kingsbridge 1 Wind Operation, which was constructed in 2006. The K2 project included the installation of 140 Siemens wind turbines, one of the largest wind energy projects in Ontario. The K2 Wind Farm was designed to generate enough electricity to meet the average annual power needs for approximately 100,000 Ontario homes.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

Together with Black & McDonald’s Joint Venture Partner AMEC, B&M’s Southern Ontario Utility Region was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the K2 Wind Farm project.

The services provided by the team included:

  • Installation of a 230 kV substation, a 500 kV substation, wind tower foundations and turbines
  • Construction of access roads for each turbine site
  • Construction of an operations & maintenance building
  • Installation of 179 km long overhead and underground collector system
  • Installation of 5 km long underground transmission line
  • Complete testing and commissioning of stations and turbines
