Halifax Airport Taxiway Restoration
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Halifax Stanfield International Airport is Atlantic Canada’s principal full-service airport, providing passengers and cargo clients access to markets around the world. The airport offers non-stop flights to more than 40 destinations in Canada, the U.S., the Caribbean and Europe, and serves on average almost 12,000 passengers every day. This air access provides options for local travelers and exporters while creating opportunities to attract visitors to the beautiful Atlantic Region of Canada.
More than 5,600 full-time-equivalent jobs contributing $355 million annually in direct income rely on the airport. A recent study pegged the economic spin-offs at $3.8 billion. An internationally recognized leader in customer service, Halifax Standfield International is certified as Airport Service Quality Assured, an industry gold standard for service excellence.
To maintain high service standards and its status as the hub aviation complex for Atlantic Canada, the Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) has embarked on a multi-year Airport Improvement Program (AIP). When it needed to restore its Taxiway A, HIAA called on Black & McDonald (B&M) to get the job done without fuss or delay.
B&M SCOPE OF WORK
Taxiways at busy airports, like Halifax International, are the arteries that keep the steady flow of passengers and cargo arriving and departing. When one is blocked it not only can cause delays but also raise safety concerns as pilots and air traffic control must adapt to changing circumstances on the ground. B&M’s scope of work for this project consisted of the supply and installation of inset lighting, including underground conduit with all associated trenching, backfilling and wiring. Strict adherence to the airside procedures and policies was mandated for all the installation work.
BENEFITS TO CLIENT OR PROBLEM(S) SOLVED
Nothing makes pilots happier than clear skies, and well-marked and lit taxiways for active runways. HIAA relied on the professionals at B&M to provide thorough, precise and rigorously compliant expertise to ensure the airport returned its taxiways to service to maintain the excellence its customers have come to expect.
