PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Cavendish Farms (Cavendish) is a french fry processing company delivering quality products to homes and businesses around the world. It was founded in 1980 when JD Irving Limited purchased the CM MacLean Potato and Vegetable Processing facility in New Annan, PEI. Cavendish Farms began with a single processing facility in the picturesque maritime community. It has grown to include other operations in Prince Edward Island, Ontario, North Dakota, and the latest in Lethbridge, Alberta.

When Cavendish needed to upgrade its HVAC and refrigeration systems in its Plant 1, it called on Black & McDonald (B&M) to handle its mechanical design and engineering. B&M’s expertise in HVAC/refrigeration installation and maintenance was a major reason behind making the project a success.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

The B&M project scope consisted of installing a new 2,800 ton evaporative condenser tied into an existing 4,000 ton ammonia refrigeration plant at the Cavendish Farms Plant 1. The work also included the installation of new 10 in. and 12 in. discharge and condensate drain piping tied into the existing piping system, and the removal of four obsolete condensers.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT AND PROBLEM SOLVED

With B&M as Cavendish Farms’ partner, the retrofit had a tight three month schedule with the final work being done during a one week plant shutdown. The project was completed on time and within budget.
