PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The 250,000 sq. ft., 4-storey Patient Care Wing at Etobicoke General Hospital (EGH) redevelopment is a LEED Silver targeted facility that was part of a phased redevelopment plan.

The project involved the construction of a new patient care wing, including a critical care inpatient unit, a combined cardiac, respiratory and neurodiagnostic outpatient clinic, a women’s and children’s unit complete with birthing suites, and a new main entrance and lobby as an addition to the existing EGH facility. Incorporating public spaces connected to the ravine, landscape and community, created a new public face for this important community institution.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

EGH was a P3 design-build-finance-maintain project. Black & McDonald was responsible for supplying, installing, testing and commissioning the entire electrical scope of work that included fire alarms, security, electrical distribution and Information Communication and Automation Technology (ICAT) systems such as access control, intercom, RTLS, public address, audio visual, wifi and nurse call.

INNOVATIVE PROCESS

This project was a brand new hospital build connected to and fully integrated with the old existing hospital. Consolidation and integration was carried out in phases and sequences and was fully planned with the expectation to minimize and eliminate disruption to the existing hospital, patients and staff.
