PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Calgary Airport underwent a major expansion with a new runway and supporting facilities in order to successfully service 13 million passengers a year. The development program consisted of a 4,270 metre runway with associated high-speed taxiways, a concrete apron around the new terminal, two underpasses and a centralized de-icing facility.

Black & McDonald (B&M) was contracted by the construction manager PCL/Parsons/ Dufferin, in a joint venture with Tristar Electric, and provided supervision, qualified labour, tools, equipment, hardware and materials for construction of the airfield navigation systems. The project also included inset lighting, apron lighting, floodlighting, approach systems, and all associated conduit and cable works.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

B&M’s remit included:

  • Direct buried and concrete encased underground ducts
  • Supply and placement of all cabling for electrical systems
  • Placement of grounding
  • Connection of new systems to existing
  • Commissioning and verification of systems
  • B&M runway, taxiways and apron lighting
  • Runway approach lighting, apron flood light and inset lighting
  • New NAV Canada facilities
  • Pavement sensor system and aircraft detection system
  • Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ALCMS) installation
  • Field electric centre electrical equipment
  • Direct buried and concrete encased underground ducts

UNIQUE ASPECTS

  • At 14,000 ft long and 200 ft wide it was the largest runway constructed in North America at the time
  • Performed runway paving activities as per stringent NAV Canada specifications in highly advanced and weather sensitive environments
  • Includes a complete airfield system with an aircraft parking apron, taxiways and other related infrastructure
  • 100% LED lighting with over 5,000 inset and edge lights installed
