PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Durham Region is east of Toronto within the Golden Horseshoe. It is a mix of rural, residential and commercial land. The region has a thriving agricultural sector to the north and lakefront urban communities with a diverse employment base to the south. Durham region has eight unique municipalities: Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby. The Regional Municipality of Durham provides governance and many of the local services including water treatment to the citizens there.

The Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) is located in Pickering on the northern shore of Lake Ontario. The project involved the construction of a new influent pumping station, headworks building, biofilter odour control system and flow metering building for the Stage 3. It also involved the construction of a new submersible raw sewage pumping station to convey influent sewage flows to the Stage 3 treatment process on site making it one of the deepest and most complex pumping stations in the region.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

Black & McDonald provided fabrication and/or installation of the following:

  • Odour control exhaust system, including stainless steel and FRP ductwork, dampers, centrifugal fans and exhaust stack
  • Building unitary air conditioning equipment and refrigerant piping
  • HVAC metal ductwork, fans and air inlets and outlets.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT OR PROBLEM(S) SOLVED

When Durham Region needed improvements and upgrades to a key piece of waste water treatment infrastructure, it called on Black & McDonald. The Duffin Creek WPCP’s upgrades will ensure the system continues to function optimally, providing clean effluent to the community it serves. As the region blossoms to an estimated 1 million people by 2031, this vital service will be able to meet the coming demand and supply clean and safe water for its citizens for years to come.
