Voisey’s Bay Nickel Mine Construction

Client

Vale Newfoundland and Labrador

Location

Voisey’s Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Vale Newfoundland and Labrador’s (Vale) Voisey’s Bay operation employs about 450 people. Vale is conducting site work and tendering for the development of an underground mine. Construction began mid-2016 and is scheduled to be completed in 2022. An additional 400 people will be employed at the mine and concentrator when underground mining begins.

Black & McDonald (B&M) was the trades contractor responsible for all civil, architectural, mechanical, and electrical installations required to install and commission a 360-person camp. These personnel would support the construction of the underground mine at the Voisey’s Bay site in Northern Labrador.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

B&M placed the modules for the living quarters and kitchen facilities, and completed all architectural connections and on-site interconnections of the modules including walls, doors, flooring and furniture placement and construction. It also included the construction and placement of all foundations. B&M installed the entire electrical infrastructure from the incoming 3,000 A service to the interconnection of the living quarters and kitchen facilities for a fully functioning 360-person camp. Additionally, B&M completed all of the above-grade mechanical services required to provide water and sewer interconnections. There were also renovations to the Common Building to build 75 office spaces within the existing building foot print.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT AND PROBLEM SOLVED

B&M used its vast camp installation experience and proven project-planning tools to overcome the challenges of working at a remote project site with limited access to materials and digital facilities such as the internet and telecommunications facilities. That’s why, when Vale needed to expand its living accommodations for the new mine, it called on B&M’s expertise to build the site, right through to its completion.
