King Edward Memorial Hospital Re-Development

Client

Paget Health Services Limited

Location

Hamilton, Bermuda

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) was Bermuda’s only acute and long-term care facility, located in Paget Parish just outside the city of Hamilton. The many hospital multidisciplinary services included allied health, critical care, diagnostic imaging, extended care, laboratory, 360 beds, maternal/child, medical/surgical wards, outpatient, pharmacy and surgical services. Composed of more than 100 individual islands, Bermuda has a land mass of about 21 square miles.

Given the hospital’s relatively isolated geographic location in the Atlantic Ocean, the Bermuda community needed a range of services far broader than would commonly be expected of a hospital serving a similar population base.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

Black & McDonald (B&M) was the contractor for the mechanical and electrical installations for the new Acute Care Wing of KEMH. The new Acute Care Wing included
90 single-patient rooms, a new Emergency Department, Diagnostic Imaging, ambulatory care services including oncology, same-day surgery and dialysis, a central utility plant and a sewage treatment plant.

B&M’s scope of work included supply, installation and commissioning of complete systems, including HVAC, Plumbing, Drainage, Fire Protection, Medical Gases, Building Controls, Heating & Cooling Piping, Abstraction Wells, Site Services, Electrical Distribution, Lighting, Telecoms, Nurse Call, Fire Alarms and Security. The hospital is now LEED certified.

B&M is proud to hold the Facilities Maintenance Service Contract with Paget Health Services for the new Acute Care Wing for a thirty year period. B&M consistently exceeds
its client’s expectations.
