Curl Moncton Icehouse Expansion

Client

Curl Moncton Inc

Location

Moncton, New Brunswick

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Previously known as the Beausejour Curling Club, a fire destroyed the entire recreational complex in 1975. After the rebuild the club struggled with falling revenues forcing bankruptcy in 2000. The club then developed a strategic plan and transformed its business model. Membership grew from 168 to 400. It merged with other local curling associations and Curl Moncton Inc. was born.

When Curl Moncton embarked on an expansion of its facilities in 2018, the organization hired Black & McDonald (B&M) to provide electrical, plumbing and HVAC/refrigeration expertise.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

All of B&M’s Atlantic Region’s divisions provided full electrical, mechanical, plumbing and refrigeration scope on the expansion project. The plan involved five new curling sheets, main floor and second floor viewing areas, and a 150 ft. heated hallway to join the new building to the existing facility.

The major components of the project included two new rooftop units with duct systems to serve each viewing area, installation of the ice shed dehumidifier and its ductwork, four gas fired unit heaters, over 400 ft. of gas piping, plumbing for the additional bathrooms, and a complete refrigeration package for the new ice surfaces.

BENEFITS TO CLIENTS AND PROBLEM SOLVED

The February 2018 project saw turbulent winter weather plaguing the project schedule. Frequent snow, ice and freezing rain thwarted construction multiple times and a sudden change in the roof specification caused delays.

B&M worked closely with the general contractor and Curl Moncton to get the project back-on-track and was able to deliver the scope of work as promised.
