PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 1897, Gordon Food Services (GFS) began operating in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as a butter and egg delivery service, becoming the first food service company with a motorized delivery truck in 1914. GFS continued to grow steadily so that by 1960 sales reached $5 million. As the company expanded, GFS moved into Canada in 1993, which made it the largest, privately-owned food service distributor in North America.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

As the food and beverage leader continued to blossom, the Amherst distribution centre added 40,000 sq. ft. of freezing and cooling storage to meet demand. With an extensive expansion plan, GFS called on Republic Refrigeration Inc. to partner with Black & McDonald (B&M) to develop an innovative and state-of-the art system to preserve its perishable goods.

The refrigerated spaces are maintained by a 360 ton multi-temperature central ammonia system utilizing 560 hp of screw compressor capacity. Variable frequency drives were installed on the screw compressors and condenser to maximize efficiencies.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT

The equipment installed by B&M is directed by a dedicated refrigeration control system designed to maximize energy efficiencies and reduce consumption. Waste heat is used to provide frost protection for the freezer and cooler floors. The new freezing and cooling expansion will go a long way to ensuring the restaurants, universities, healthcare facilities, hotels and sports venues that GFS supplies get their high-quality food and beverages to enable their businesses to thrive.
