Pugwash Central Water Supply System

Client

Municipality of the County of Cumberland

Location

Pugwash, Nova Scotia

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 2012, the Municipality of the County of Cumberland, in conjunction with the Pugwash Village Commission, created a central water supply for the village of Pugwash. In 2015, the Municipality of the County of Cumberland and provincial and federal officials announced a water infrastructure project that would bring clean water to the village. It involved building a centralized water treatment plant, as well as an associated reservoir and distribution system for Pugwash. Prior to having a central water supply, Pugwash relied on individual wells for its drinking water. Many of these wells became contaminated and the water was
unsafe to drink. Once complete, the plant would ensure that the community had access to a clean and reliable supply of drinking water.

When the community needed professional and reliable construction services to propel the new water treatment plant into service, the County of Cumberland called Black & McDonald (B&M).

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

B&M was contracted to electrically and mechanically install the pre-purchased water treatment process equipment. This scope included assembly of equipment in well buildings, a water treatment plant, a reservoir building and a chlorine booster station. The work commenced in the fall of 2017. The water is pumped from three drilled wells throughout the property and brought to the main building, where the use of Ferazur and Mangazur filters and a biological filtration process is used to remove iron and magnesium from the water. Chlorine is then added and the water is sent to a reservoir for storage until needed by the community.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT

The County of Cumberland and the people of the village of Pugwash can relax and be secure that they have clean water to drink thanks to the know-how of the professionals at Black & McDonald.
