PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The North End Sewage Treatment Plant, otherwise known as the North End Water Pollution Control Center, is Winnipeg’s oldest and largest sewage treatment plant. First commissioned in 1937, it provides 70 percent of the city’s wastewater treatment.
B&M SCOPE OF WORK
As design-builder and general contractor on this project, Black & McDonald (B&M) worked with our design engineers and automation consultants, AECOM and Schneider, to:
- Design and automate the facility for the client’s 100 year vision
- Upgrade the power supply to accommodate the client’s increase in customer base
The work included construction of a new switchyard to house redundant 30 MVA transformers, a new electrical building and electrical distribution to feed existing electrical distribution equipment on the site. Additionally, the work included replacement of electrical distribution equipment within the secondary clarifier facility.
BENEFITS TO CLIENT OR PROBLEM(S) SOLVED
- The client wanted an automation system that was not in keeping with industry trends. B&M met with the client and its advocate, and proposed a more favorable solution to save the client money in the future.
- Asbestos was found on the site. It was remediated by a competent registered abatement company.
- B&M’s project management team expected this project to be completed under budget and ahead of schedule.
