Metrolinx ERMF Mainline Track and Signals East Rail Maintenance Facility

Client

Metrolinx

Location

Whitby, Ontario

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The East Rail Maintenance Facility Mainline Track and Signals project was designed to connect Metrolinx’s rolling stock maintenance facility to the GO Subdivision. The project included modifying an existing plant, Victoria, and completely relocating another plant, Thickson, allowing the installation of new turnouts into and out of the maintenance facility.

This project involved removing and replacing old track panels with new panels that were to be built on site and installed during our pre-planned cut over work blocks.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

Black & McDonald (B&M) was contracted to install and commission all signals, radio communications, switches, and crossovers in accordance with CN SCPs and GIs. We provided signals bungalows and cases for this project that will be wired and undergo factory acceptance testing in our Scarborough, Ontario wiring shop. B&M will also perform all supporting works—civil, mechanical, electrical, track, and signals—site grading, gas install, utility hookups, and signal cabling.

The signals, cantilevers, masts, and their foundations are to be designed, supplied and installed by B&M.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT OR PROBLEM(S) SOLVED

Metrolinx did not want track panels slid on in-service rail. B&M accommodated the request by arranging to move panels into their location with rail carts.

Preventing the train schedule from being impacted was of the utmost importance to Metrolinx. We took great care to accommodate this requirement by meticulously designing our work around Metrolinx’s train schedule.
