PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project called for the modernization of the District Energy System in Ottawa that provides heating and cooling services to 55,000 occupants in 87 government buildings including the Parliament.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

Construction work at five existing DES plants, including construction of new two Central Heating & Cooling Plants (CHCP), two existing plants and decommissioning of one plant Conversion of existing infrastructure from current steam-based or High Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) system to a Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) heating solution

  • Replacement of all steam chillers with electric chillers for cooling services
  • Installation of 15 natural gas boilers and 14 electric chillers
  • Installation of around 53 km of piping ranging from 2.5 cm to 2 m.
  • Installation of distribution piping: underground (direct buried), tunnels, under bridges

PROJECT BENEFITS

Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030, significantly lowering operation costs, improving safety conditions, increasing system redundancy and creating architectural landmarks as community assets.
