City of Winnipeg North End Sewage Treatment Plant Power Supply Upgrade

Client

City of Winnipeg

Location

Winnipeg, Manitoba

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. It is centred on the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, close to the longitudinal centre of North America. Known as the Gateway to the West, Winnipeg is a transportation and railway hub with a diversified economy featuring vibrant trade, manufacturing, education, health care and social service sectors.

Black & McDonald (B&M) was selected as the design-builder to provide all work, services and materials to design and construct power supply upgrades at the Winnipeg North End Sewage Treatment Plant.

B&M SCOPE OF WORK

As design-builder and general contractor on this project, B&M worked with design engineers and automation consultants AECOM and Schneider to:

  • Design the project while it was being built
  • Design and automate the facility for the client’s 100-year vision
  • Upgrade the power supply to accommodate the client’s increase in customer base

The work included construction of a new switchyard to house redundant 30 MVA transformers, a new electrical building, and electrical distribution to feed existing equipment. In addition, the work also included replacement of electrical distribution equipment within the secondary clarifier facility.

KEY CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS IMPLEMENTED

The client had previously chosen an automation system that was inefficient. We met with the client and its advocate and proposed a better solution that would save money.

UNIQUE ASPECTS

  • The project was fast-tracked to recover schedule days lost due to weather. There were no additional weather delays as the building moved to the final stage of total enclosure.
  • Asbestos was found and remediated by a registered abatement company.
  • Our project management team planned to complete the job under budget and ahead of schedule.

BENEFITS TO CLIENT OR PROBLEM(S) SOLVED

When the City of Winnipeg needed key power improvements to a wastewater treatment plant in its North End, it called on Black & McDonald to take on the task with thoroughness and professionalism. We provided the construction expertise that enabled Winnipeg to save funds and address job challenges while delivering the project ahead of schedule and under budget.
