
Clarington Transformer Station Step Down
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Black & McDonald (B&M) constructed a transformer station for Hydro One Networks Inc. called “Clarington TS”. The station is located in the municipality of Clarington, which is in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The purpose of this project was to replace 3,000 megawatts of capacity that at the time was supplied by the largest nuclear generation station in the GTA (Pickering Nuclear Generation Station), which was slated for decommissioning. When Clarington TS was fully commissioned it would be able to offset the generation loss with transmission capability and supply as much as 25 per cent of the East GTA’s electricity demand.
B&M SCOPE OF WORK
Supply of Equipment, Materials and Labour for Construction, Testing and Commissioning of Clarington (500 kV to 230 kV) for the Step Down Transformer Station included:
- Nine km of station drainage
- Two 500 kV circuit breakers and sixteen 230 kV circuit breakers
- Two 230 kV bus tie breakers
- Two 750 MVA auto-transformers
- Two 230 kV capacitor banks and two 230 kV capacitor bank breakers
- Two 750 MVA station transformers
- One ATS building
- Two relay buildings
- Over 200 km of cable
- Over 1,300 structural steel members and foundations
- Over 148,000 sq. m. of yard stone material
- At the peak of the project’s construction there was close to 70 tradespeople and project staff onsite.
