Where do I Start?
Several colleges offer programs in the trades. These programs vary in length, difficulty and entry criteria. Trades people must be able to interact and work with others as a team. All trades at Black & McDonald require apprenticeship and certification.
You can start by contacting your local Union Hall for your appropriate trade.
Apprenticeships
For those who have completed high school, apprenticeships are also offered by colleges or any company that employs trades people. Black & McDonald offers and provides this type of training. Apprenticeships range from three and a half to five years in length and often result in a full-time job once completed. An employer who is willing to train an apprentice must first be found.
Requirements for Black & McDonald Apprenticeships:
- High School Diploma
- Must be hired through local union hiring halls
- A safety and orientation course must be taken before working on site
- A course on the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) must be completed
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for all jobs
- Apprentices will become a member in their trade union
- Apprentices must take a First Aid and CPR course after beginning

Trade Certification
In order to get your certification, a Provincial Qualification Exam must be passed at the end of the apprenticeship.
