
Photovoltaic Roof Top Solar System
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
It is not possible for green buildings to be constructed today without integrated teams of architects, engineers and contractors, including the facility maintenance contractor. Black & McDonald (B&M) has long taken part in such integrated project delivery models, providing the key aspects of both the technical construction and facility management afterward. Decisions made during design and construction can reduce the owners’ costs throughout the building’s sustainable life. It was only fitting that if B&M performs these tasks for clients they should have renewable production of their own.
B&M solar installation, although small in comparison to some of these projects, helps reduce its carbon footprint and demonstrate a fundamental commitment to clean energy in its own business.
B&M SCOPE OF WORK
B&M installed a 25 kW photovoltaic roof top system at its Kansas City office. To protect the current roof and warranty, it had a special layer of roofing material put down. The racking materials were laid out and ballast blocking was elevated to the roof. PV panels, racking and ballasting were installed at the same time to secure the system from high winds. While the roof work was being done, B&M installed various disconnects on the ground, an inverter and a transformer to meet all of the electrical requirements for our system.
BENEFITS
Once complete, B&M’s final documentation was sent to the local utility (Kansas City Power & Light) and a special solar meter was installed. This is an important part of the process as without the correct meter it is not possible to track and/or get credit for energy production.
This project was completed on time and to B&M’s satisfaction. It continues to help achieve environmental consciousness, improve operational effectiveness, and minimize facility obsolescence.
