Atomic Energy of Canada Limited

AECL selected the partnership of Adtechs/JGC and Black & McDonald for the design-build services for their new wastewater evaporator installation. Black & McDonald completed 35,000 manhours of construction including project management, civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation work, all performed to the stringent quality assurance procedures required by AECL.

Erie Shores Wind Farm
Port Burwell, ON
As general contractor, Black & McDonald provided communications, electrical, labourers, millwrights, ironworkers and operating personnel for this 99 MW wind farm. The installation consisted of 66 GE 1.5 MW wind turbine generators, a complete fibre optic communication system for SCADA operations, 30 km each of overhead and underground collector system cabling, a 100 MVA 115 kV – 34.5 kV substation and 29 km of 115 kV transmission line.

Huron Shores Wind Farm

In partnership with AMEC, the scope of work included the complete design, construction and commissioning of a 44KV – 27.6KV, 10 MVA substation and 27.6KV underground distribution system interconnecting five 1.8 mega watt wind turbine generators.

Kingsbridge Wind Farm
near Goderich, ON
Black & McDonald's utility resources undertook the installation of 40 kilometers of overhead distribution and 25 kilometres of underground distribution to service the twenty-two 1.8 mw Vestas windmills. The second project, Kingsbridge II, is now in progress.

Ottawa Health Sciences Co-Generation Facility
Ottawa, ON
For this facility, Black & McDonald provided labour, material and the critically important quality assurance capabilities during the owner-scheduled plant shutdowns. Additional work was also later undertaken for the installation of a new medium pressure boiler.

Ontario Hydro Generating Station

At the R. H. Saunders Generating Station, replacing cables within the tunnel and assisting with the E.H.V. power to terminate them was done in 4 projects, with no loss time and 1-2 days ahead of schedule each year. Projects involved Black & McDonald's electrical and civil personnel.

Ontario Power Generation, Administration Building
Nanticoke, ON
Black & McDonald provided the electrical installation for the 45,000 square foot addition to Ontario Power Generation's Administration Building in Nanticoke, Ontario. Elements of the project were a paging system, lighting, power wiring and decorative lighting for the new facility.

Ontario Power Generation, Condenser Tube Replacement
Pickering, ON
Steps taken by Black & McDonald for the condenser tube replacement involved replacing twenty-four 57-ton stainless steel tube bundles, installing newly designed water boxes and 6' diameter inlet debris filters and circulating cooling water pipes. Finally, a new condenser ball cleaning system for the on line cleaning of the condenser tubes was installed and a new vacuum deairator for removing dissolved oxygen from the boiler feed water system. All in all, the project epitomized Black & McDonald's abilities to perform efficiently, effectively and safely under the most critical challenging conditions.

Ontario Power Generation, Liquid Waste Water Evaporator Pickering, ON
Black & McDonald undertook extensive mechanical and electrical repairs, modifications and enhancements to the Pickering "A" Unit 1" in preparation for its return to service. Health and safety as well as environmental considerations were paramount to this project and Black & McDonald completed a remarkable 2.5 million manhours without a lost time injury.

Plasma Gasification Demonstration Plant
Ottawa, ON
Plasco's 3-acre pilot plant uses a patented environmentally friendly plasma gasification process that turns landfill waste into electricity. Black & McDonald completed the mechanical site services, HVAC and entire mechanical process, adding a great deal of value-engineering during construction. The first plant of its type in North America, this extremely fast-track project was completed start to finish in approximately seven months.
