Projects Operations Manager
I have worked for Black & McDonald out of the Winnipeg office since 2010. I started with the company as the Health & Safety Advisor for Manitoba, and have also been given the opportunity to fill the roles of Human Resources Administrator and Regional Improvement Coordinator. By 2012, the company's ever growing safety culture allowed me to transition into the role of Health & Safety Manager for the province of Manitoba, as there were now safety responsibilities regarding oversight of all Black & McDonald groups working within the province.
Recently, I was approached with the opportunity to transition into an operations role within the projects division. My current role involves coordinating the overall goings-on within the projects group while overseeing project managers and administrative staff. The new role will prove challenging, but I have support from both my co-workers and the management team.
Overall, I feel as though Black & McDonald offers a pretty unique work experience, not only within the construction industry, but within the workforce in general. I think it's pretty rare for the owners of a company this size to be so welcoming, and so open to hearing ideas and feedback from both office and field staff. Black & McDonald's owners have truly stuck to the principles that their grandfather developed when the company was founded almost a hundred years ago. When asked, I tell people that working for Black & McDonald makes you feel like you are truly part of something.
The company also believes on promoting from within. They have shown that if you are a 'Black & Mac' employee that believes the company's philosophy, there are plenty of opportunities for advancement and professional development. Despite continuous growth, there is still a family atmosphere companywide. Though there are over 5,000 Black & McDonald employees, the owners have cultivated an atmosphere where it feels like everyone knows each other.
